Valentine's Day is a special day for couples. Why not make it extra special and break away from flowers, cards and candy this year?

Valentine's Day induces holiday-specific stress for many people in relationships. The pressure to find a truly unique gift that shows exactly how a couple feels about each other can be overwhelming. All too often, lovers are distracted by the loud Valentine's Day displays and end up buying something in a glittery box or a stuffed animal. This year, why not try something truly unique and thoughtful? Here are some ideas:

D.I.Y Candy for Couples

Spend quality time and make marshmallow pops together. Instead of store-bought chocolates this year, buy a bag of marshmallows, some chocolate, coconut, sprinkles and that special someone's favorite candy. Over low heat or in a double boiler, melt the chocolate. Skewer the marshmallows, dip them in chocolate and roll them into tasty toppings. Allow the chocolate to set by placing the marshmallow pops on waxed paper to cool. Enjoy!

Give the Book of Love

If couples enjoy writing love notes to each other on little scraps of paper, why not buy a journal or scrapbook to house them in? It's a great keepsake, and may become an ongoing tradition. Write on the first page before giving it as a gift. Write to each other in it often, paste pictures, keepsakes and funny illustrations and see how long it takes to fill it up.

Couples Reminisce About Their First Date

A romantic date idea for long-term couples is to go back to the place where they first met, or had their first date. Partners can bring along favorite pictures of each other and together during the beginning of their relationship and look at them together. Play music that was popular at that time, and enjoy all the memories that come to mind.

A Valentine's Day Party for Two

Go all out and throw a party just for two. Choose a theme and a dress code, whether it be pajamas or black tie. Create a signature cocktail (or virgin drink), party favors and a musical playlist. Make or takeout all-time favorite foods . A night of games, dancing, great food and drink at home can be as fun as going out.

A Hot Date Idea

For a romantic night to remember, rent a hot tub! There are plenty of companies that rent hot tubs for the day or even a whole weekend. Take a break from winter and relax and unwind in the sensual heat of the water. It might be fun to create a tropical, poolside atmosphere, with fresh-cut fruit and slushy drinks, umbrellas and beach towels. Don't forget the lotion!

From do-it-yourself edible treats and year-round love letters to memorable and creative dates, Valentine's Day doesn't have to be full of hackneyed greeting cards and candlelit dinners anymore. There are countless fun and unique ideas for Valentine's Day. It's just a matter of stepping outside of the heart-shaped box!
